The Cause and Effects of Alcoholism

Most people don’t care or take alcoholism into account. Alcoholism is a serious problem in some societies. The outcomes or effects of this addiction are really major and sometimes lethal. Many people get used to drinking alcohol easily and can mistreat it. The main goal of this essay is to discuss the physical, psychological, and economic effects of alcoholism.

The first effect of alcoholism is always physical. This is the most important effect because it can kill you. Alcoholism eventually causes cirrhosis of the liver, kidneys and stomach which may get you into stomach ulcers. Alcohol changes the way the body digests the nutrients that needs to stay healthy. Alcoholism also causes lethal damages in the  nerves and heart, so it causes differentiation or changes in the body’s movements suddenly,  loss of appetite and balance, depression, heart beat disorder and heartburns(1,2). From these aforementioned physical consequences, drinking alcohol in mass quantities can easily cause your death.

The second effect caused by alcoholism is psychological. Alcohol makes you feel relaxed, talkative, more confident but if you abuse it, it will cause depression, increase anxiety, slurry speech, slow reflexes, not being able to walk, not being able to differentiate between people you know or not, encountering blackouts, memory lapses and brain damage(3,4). It also causes legal and family problems, change of behaviours, violence, overrated drama, suicidal thoughts, among others. Alcohol is very powerful and alters all your normal behaviours, skills and attitude. Alcohol is like a drug that you can get addicted to then reacts negatively to the human body.

The third effect of alcoholism is economic. According to a report for the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the National Institute of Health, alcohol abuse costs the U.S. economy an approximate $134 billion a year(5). If you drink two or three times in a week, it could cost you about $25 or more per week, times the thousands of people doing the same thing you are, companies can easily make millions of dollars in just seven days. Alcohol is not cheap. Plus, some countries are going through an economic crisis at the moment which makes it even worse for people in general. Almost all alcoholics surely do not think about the money they spend when they are drunk and sometimes before.

In conclusion, the effects of alcoholism can cause many problems that affect your life in all aspects in general. Alcohol changes the way you digest nutrients, impairs your ability to hold control of your muscles, sends false signals to your brain, and causes other disorders that affect your health physically and mentally. The effects of alcohol vary from a person to another depending on their age. It also can cause you feeling negative towards things or changes in your behaviour that results in problems with your family, friends, workmates and with yourself. Plus, it may leave you in poverty because it costs a lot.
