This is a research I made for the Writing and Research course I had in the first semester. I chose this comparison just to prove that not all famous and pricey devices should be the winner of the market. And by that I mean Not all products from apple should be the winner of the market.

Nokia N8 and iphone 4

1. Abstract

This research is going to discuss the software, hardware and maintenance and service centers comparison between the Nokia N8 and Apple iphone. The purpose of this project is to determine what product is superior to the other and to gain more knowledge about each product. The methodology of my research is using the the E-Brary of Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU), online articles, reviews and interviews in this research. I expect that the Nokia N8 will be the superior product to the Apple iphone. And prove that it is more economic and efficient.

2. Introduction

People are wondering which would win the race between the Nokia N8 and the Apple iphone. People are also wondering the possibility of having the both of them being compared to each other. Well, the moment of truth is now near to discover which device is more superior to the other. It is a challenge since both products are different in so many ways.

I became interested in doing this research because I am personally a Nokia fan ever since I was a kid. The love of comparing technological products is already in my blood. Proving the opposite of what most people think is also an interesting point for me. The Existence of this subject raises the bars even more because it is not just a phone. It is about the service that the maintenance center of each company gives. And the satisfactory of the consumer.

This research is going to discuss 3 main topics. The hardware aspect of each product. Clearly, both products are different in shape and design but similar in size. The service and maintenance center for each phone. Both companies are strong in that field. And finally, the customer feedback that’s being received. Which is the most important segment of this research.

2.1 Thesis

The purpose of this subject is to know which of those two products is superior to the other. And see which company is really winning.

The goal of this topic is to prove which product has more success through the hardware perspective first. Then the service and maintenance that both companies give. And finally and most importantly, the customer feedback.

2.2 Literature Review

Nokia and Apple have 2 devices. The Nokia N8 and the iphone 4. Both have good features. Strong attributes. According to Goodmen (2010). Nokia N8 and iPhone 4 are 2 of the biggest and strongest handsets and attribute of the year. According to Bee (2010). It has been at least 2 years of each company making their own devices.

The iphone will win the race. According to Goodmen (2010). Nokia N8 may come up trumps on perspective such as its camera and price, on the other hand, the iPhone does a homerun on all others. According to Vikram (2010). Those two resources was used to be aimed to get the Nokia N8 as victor, but it appears that what happened is the opposite.

According to a table comparison made by Ziegler (2010), showing that the iphone is better than the Nokia N8. Actually, most sources state that a losing comparison from the start is a feature comparison depending on the consumer. Apple shipped and sold 14.1 million iPhones this summer alone, more sales expected when fall numbers are released. According to Johnson (2010). The amount of iphones sold makes a challenge to Nokia since the varieties is huge in the Nokia mobile industry.

The nokia N8 will take over the iphone due to its features and hardware perspective. According to Bryan (2010), that the Nokia N8 has a USB while the iphone hasn’t. According to dodgevidz.com (2011), the Nokia N8 has a 12 megapixel camera with a xenon flash from the company Carl Ziess. While the iphone has just a 5 megapixel camera with an ordinary flash. Maintenance and service centers of Nokia are well known to be spread everywhere and third party maintenance companies have partnership with the official service centers. While the Apple iphone does not have third party partnership maintenance and very limited service centers around the world (Axiom Interview, 2010).

3. Hardware

Speaking of the hardware perspective of each product. The Nokia N8 provides plenty of advanced features compared to its opponent. 12Megapixel Camera with flash and Carl Ziess autofocus while the iphone has a normal 5Megapixel camera. Both products have a  3.5Inch screen, the N8 holding a resolution of 640×320 while the iphone has a 930×640 pixel resolution, this feature is not considered significant (Catanzariti, 2010). The Nokia N8 has a High Definition Multimedia Interface port (HDMI) while the iphone lacks that option. The Nokia N8 playback’s sound in 5.1 Dolby Sorround Sound quality (Leach, 2010).

The iphone is slimmer than the N8, but it comes with consequences like unable to zoom in properly to get the right focus of the object. The N8 has a standby time that reaches up to 400 hours. On the other hand, the iphone just reaches 300 hours (Bryan, 2010). Version 3 of Bluetooth has been provided in the Nokia N8. The iphone is still lacking on that part of technology having a version of 2.1 bluetooth. N8 has the capability of extending its memory by having a micro SD card slut that can expand the capacity of the device up to 46GB. On the other hand, the iphone is missing on that part (Phil, 2010).

Interviewing with an official representative of the Axiom Telecommunication Company (Axiom Telecom, 2011) which is a third party maintenance and service provider throughout the middle east supporting most of the famous companies that manufactures mobiles like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung etc. Discussing the hardware and physical features aspect of both products. The N8 has a solid hardware, especially the screen that has been made to prevent severe scratches or breaks which increased Nokia phone owners by 15%. On the other hand, iphone tries its best at providing that option but people are still able to have their iphone’s screen scratched or cracked, despite the fact of a weakened screen, owners of the Apple iphone has increased by 25%. The HDMI port which has been supported by Nokia on the N8 is a very important feature nowadays. People are treating their phones as their television set and movie presenter which increased Nokia phone owners by 23%. FM transmitter is important to listen to your own tunes basically in the car which majorly increased the Nokia phone users by 30% which 20% of them are between 18 – 25 years old and the 10% is 25 years old and more. Having a memory slut in your phone is an essential. You never know when you need to move a huge amount of videos, pictures or any kind of data anytime, anywhere and to anybody. This feature increased the Nokia phone users by 18%.

4. Software

The software aspect of both products are very interesting. The Nokia has been working on their own operating for more than 10 years. Apple has been working on their operating system for more than 6 years. The Nokia N8 uses an operating system called Symbian OS. The operating system used to have many glitches and issues concerning the user interface and security check up problems (Goodwin, 2010). On the other hand, the Apple iphone has not faced any software problems. They are using an operating system called IOS but it suffered from the support of different softwares that were not capable of running on it (O’Hear, 2010).

The user interface of the iphone is much sleeker than the N8’s thou it is not as powerful. Runtime consumption that takes the iphone is much less than its opponent (Chubb, 2010). The N8 has a rich user interface full with many different options. Unlike the iphone, just a set of cubed programs that pops to full screen when turned on. N8 applications has more simpler ways to turn it off than the iphone’s due to restricted rules from Apple on how to use the development kit (Ziegler, 2010).

Continuing with the interview from the official representative of Axiom Telecommunication Company (Axiom Telecom, 2011) to discuss the software characteristics of both products. Both products have very appealing user interfaces. It depends on the consumer. 16% of Nokia phone owners switched to the iphone because of the interface. Runtime may affect the persuasion of each product, but that’s just for people who truly know that time is money which is just about 2% of the Nokia phone owners switching. Glitches and issues that are mostly encountering the previous Nokia devices has been solved in the N8 which majorly increased the number of Nokia phone owners by 25%. Due to solved glitches, it surely an iphone competitor. The industry of the Symbian operating system will still be functioning well.

5. Maintenance and Service Centers

Every phone company should have a maintenance and service departments throughout its different locations. Nokia has always been supporting third party phone maintenance companies to participate and join them into solving ever founded Nokia cell phone problems. (Nokia, 2011). The company also provides instant replacements for none solving software or hardware issues. It is conditioned that all third party companies must work effectively with high standards of quality and precision. Everything you need is there. They are never out of stock. (Nokia Care, 2011).

Unlike Apple, you are firmly restricted from attending your phone to any third party maintenance company. Visiting a third party company will permanently terminate your warranty of the certain Apple phone or product. Few numbers of maintenance and service departments (Apple, 2011). It is difficult to fix an issue occurring to an Apple phone due to its complexity. It takes time to get your Apple iphone back when you give them your phone. Just a few third party companies are interested in taking care of the just the Apple iphone alone (Axiom, 2011).

Concluding the interview with the official representative of Axiom Telecommunication Company (Axiom Telecom, 2011) discussing the last part which is the maintenance and service centers. A lot of people are actually frustrated when it comes to their iphones having issues in it because they know that it takes a lot of time to get it fixed. And there are just a few number of maintenance and service provider from Apple in Saudi Arabia. From the statistics of the end of the year 2010, the percentage of satisfied Nokia phone owners is 75% due to the existence of well trained third party maintenance companies and the history of Nokia itself in the country. 65 – 70% of iphone owners are always worried if something wrong happens to their phone. 85 – 90% of the phone owners have a Nokia device. 35 – 40% of the phone owners have Sony Ericsson. 25 – 30% goes to phone owners of Blackberry. 15 – 20% of the phone owners have iphones. and 10  – 15% goes to phone owners of HTC devices and Samsung. 1 – 10% are for the rest of the other minor phone companies.

6. Conclusion

The purpose of this research is to know which of those two products is superior to the other. And see which company is really succeeding. The goal of this topic is to prove which product has more success through the hardware perspective first. And software perspective. Then, the maintenance and service centers that both companies give and provide. And finally and most importantly, the customer feedback.

Regarding the first topic, the hardware perspective, it is found that Nokia N8 owners has increased by 15% due to screen’s strength. Although the iphone has a weakened screen compared to the N8, iphone owners has increased by 25%. The HDMI port supported by Nokia increased N8 phone owners by 23%. FM transmitter availability in the N8 has increased N8 phone users by 30%. Memory slut in your N8 phone is an essential which increased the N8 phone users by 18%.

In conclusion, it is now known that Nokia is winning this race although there has been big percentages of consumers switching to iphones. The N8 has proved itself as a superior product to the iphone. The Nokia N8 overrun the hardware perspective of this comparison. The Software perspective is a bit of a challenge. The satisfactory of the Nokia consumers and especially N8 didn’t even need to be compared because of the huge support to consumers.
