I submitted my first assignment 2 days ago for the Professional Development class, it’s about work ethics. My assignment is to define what does ethic mean and what does work ethics mean. I have to mention the ethical behaviors as well as violated ones with a real example, and what and why some ethics could be challenging, and to conclude the assignment with what should be done in order to get and make people aware of work ethics through what I have written.

Here you go! :

Assignment 1: Work Ethics

Ethics is the word that everyone has a different point of view about, could be right, could be wrong, could be sane or insane, but the real definition of this word is not really taken seriously by people who neglect its true meaning and value. I will try to contain or directly write about this concerning the Arab world in general and to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in particular. Ethics is a system of moral principles of high values, recognized in respect and humbleness to a particular class of human actions or a particular group or culture(1). By that, work ethics mean the prime moral behaviors that appreciate the value and importance of work, its dedication, faithfulness and loyalty.

Ethical Behaviors:

Work ethics has many values such as honesty, loyalty, respect, professionalism, courage and integrity which are just some of the premier ethical behaviors that we encounter in our workplace. Honesty, an easy word to say, a hard feature to maintain. Honesty is an important value that everyone appreciates in the workplace no matter whom you belong to, and how big or small you are considered in the workplace, it is simply about just telling the truth. Loyalty is a game that is being played with consciences, we have to always give our jobs a 100% of what we do. Only few maintain that value, and they are the ones we see succeeding today. Respect is what you never ask for to have, but, however, it’s what we are given by others in the workplace for our faithfulness, honesty, loyalty and respect to others, it’s a very dignified value that many will appreciate you for. Professionalism, “the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person like being founded upon specialized educational training”(2,3), most people tend to gain it, but a few will be dedicated to. Courage, the power and strength of mind and spirit that enables the person to encounter danger without fear and hesitation(4). Integrity,a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcomes”(5). To sum it up, it means how fair are you and how well will you do your work with perfection.

Violated Behaviors:

From my experience dealing with the Saudi Telecommunication company (STC), it is well known in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as the best and leading telephone service and network coverage provider throughout the country. Despite how good their reputation is, a number of STC employees live within the list of violated behaviors that need to be purged from them. Some employees tend to use the working hours for their personal needs, that violates the principle of professionalism. Employees actually tend to reach late and get out early, punctuality is being ignored in this case. People lacking a middleman sometimes will face difficulties in reaching their goal or having their voices heard, justice isn’t even close of being fair. Having faith and feeling responsible is the solution to these violations.

Ethical Challenges:

I haven’t faced any ethical challenges yet, but if I do, I will not neglect the most positive behaviors like integrity, loyalty, respect and punctuality, though it’s very hard to maintain. Once I start ignoring some of them, it becomes easier to forget ethics altogether.

In conclusion, the need for the incorporation of ethical awareness is needed in schools, and universities or any teaching institutions. This will lead to proudly graduate groups of students who really know the meaning of appreciation, the importance of the value of time, and among that all, to be a better productive nation.
